Thank You Can Fund

I am overwhelmed by the support I have just received. The CanFund has just announced 160 names of summer athletes who are recipients of $6000 towards their living and training expenses. The stats they posted are:
  • A record 545 applications from athletes across Canada seeking direct financial support.
  • 386 (71%) are summer athletes training for London 2012.
  • The remaining 159 (29%) are winter athletes training for Sochi 2014, including 35 medalists from Vancouver.
  • 411 (75%) of these athletes work or attend school while training full time.
  • Over 1/3 (36%) of the summer athlete applicants are not only the best in Canada, but they are the best in the world! (ranked top 10)
  • 58% of these summer athletes who have a world ranking of 1-10 have negative net incomes.
There are some big summer names on that list and I am so very thank ful! I had the unique opportunity to find out a lot about the Can Fund program when I was in Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics. They set up a Can Fund Athletes house downtown by the Media center that was in the Shaw building. We got to go in there and everything was free and donated from massages, drinks, food to the great atmosphere of the view from the Shaw building and comfy couches to watch the Olympics on TVs. It was a great experience to get to know what they are all about and yesterday I found out that I will really get to feel the effects of how hard they work! So, THANK YOU Can fund and to all the organizers, supporters and donators. Money isn't everything but it sure goes a long way in a sport like ours.
