This past week I have been on the mainland as the field hockey team has had a week long "camp." Usually these camps are intense with physical testing at the start, two-a-day sessions, lots of full field games and intense training and running. This week was like a check-in and our team physiologist, Raffi, and team dietician, Nanci, were both in town from Ontario. It was a great opportunity to re-visit the importance of our training and diets as we prepare for 2012 and the Pan Ams in October.
The national team for field hockey has always been tossed aside in Canada but the program is starting to make great strides. We may be laying the ground work for 2016 and 2020 but we can certainly still take matters into our own hands and qualify for 2012. It's been really nice to see the girls this week but it's also been very challenging not being able to practice and seeing all the newer and younger players fill Senior roles. It's tough to watch but has also been motivation for me to train really hard while I'm at home and while I can only prioritize fitness!
The week started out with a mayhem weekend in Whistler full of late nights, team games and snow shoeing! I have never been to Whistler so it was an amazing view and I heard we were there at one of the most beautiful times. The skies were clear and blue. The air was crisp and the snow was EVERYWHERE!
The camp went really well. There weren't as many practices and the turf was pretty frozen or slippery on various evenings but overall I got to see everyone and do a lot of work outs. I had a one-on-one with our physiologist in the gym today while the girls were practicing in the Richmond Oval. That was very informative. I'm going to do more strengthening without weights now that I have more techniques.
I'm heading home today and hopefully the snow isn't too crazy! Reading break has been a lot less reading and a lot more gym time but I have the weekend now to catch up!!!
The difference between now and getting to 2012:
