It's been a few days since I was able to update. That is one in part due to our result against Mexico. I wasn't up to writing about it right after the game. Anyway, we won 4-1 and it was a disappointing win because not only in the score line but in just possession on the field we wanted to dominate them. Unfortunately, the majority of the team was focused on that outcome instead of the process that would get there. Our basics were awry and we took people on in normal cases where we wouldn't. Anyway, we want to put that game behind us and move forward.
We then faced the USA the following day (yesterday) and came out fighting. We were ready to face the USA and ready to just show up for the game. Although we knew we would still be in the 3rd/4th place game regardless of the outcome - we just wanted to show that we could compete. And we sure did! We had a great game. The USA scored with 14 minutes into the game but it was on a PC that shouldn't have been called. Regardless, the game was a hard fought battle between the 25s with the USA having a bit better offensive power in our 25. One goal they scored was shot wide of the goal but the ref was standing on the endline and it hit her foot and bounced back in field where a USA girl just tapped it into the wide open net. That happens almost 1 in a million and in front of the goal?? Rediculous. Anyway, referee is part of the field so they had to count it. She had a good bruise and was limping though, that will teach her.
Later that night we had a quick ice bath and were heading for a dinner that included the parents at a Irish bar that we got connections through John's cousin or something. They had food all ready for us and all the parents were there. So many parents - Abi's Dad, Shannon's Mom, J's parents, Thea's, Baker's, Tyla's, Kate's... The rest of us "orphans" sat at a table by ourselves :)
A tradition where we have a giant Canadian flag that every athlete and staff signs. We honoured Nick and Cass, part of our staff, and then Baker and Barney introduced a new tradition. We have a new flag for all the parents that come and watch to sign :) So we honoured them and everyone sang the national anthem.
Pictures to come.
