This week was a really successful week in my recovery. We are looking at exactly 2 months since I had the surgery. I have about 2-4 months left for recovery and although I am sad to be away from the team and field hockey, it has been an unbelievable journey so far. After going through the drama of the holiday season I have gotten back on my feet, literally and metaphorically. First of all, this week I was successfully running on the treadmill pretty comfortably. I do get some soreness and pain afterwards because it is quite tiring but during the run, everything feels strong and quite mobile. I'm not allowed to really do anything fast paced where I really need to pump my arms but 30-45 minutes at a 9.5 km/hr pace is pretty awesome for me right now. The sprints and intervals are still being on the bike but I my HR monitor is helping in that department.
I've noticed big changes since the diet and increased exercise/strength workouts. First of all, I have a lot more energy, including focusing a lot better at 8:30am classes. I'm getting tired a lot earlier at night so my body is telling me that I do need 8hr of good sleep now for recovery. As well, I feel a lot happier and actually, feeling tired is the best because then you feel like you worked hard and can fall asleep right away.
I'm nearing in on the end of school and I finally mean the END of school. I'm about exactly a month of away from being done all the classes I need to become "Alexandra Jamie Lee B.Sc. Biochemistry." How amazing does that sound? I can't wait to be done and move on to something else.
I've been looking at Broadcasting, media/Journalism programs at BCIT, in Burnaby, but I obviously can't commit to programs like that yet. I have been doing really well for myself with a new job every week. Whether it's contracting for graphic art work or doing videos for some local businesses... It seems to be bringing in some cash to offset my expenses, so I'm really happy with that. I am just eager to get some official certification and training in this field.
I am also finishing up that correspondance course I started....way back in... August??? I write the final exam tomorrow and haven't really studied for it. Oh well. I just need to pass it and take the credit. My med school dreams are over so I don't even need the credits for this class.
I'm adding some more stuff to my workout regime which I am really excited about:
- increased mobility, ROM, strength training by heading to the pool for some water work outs
- adding wall push ups at 45.. this is a huge breakthrough in the strength department for my shoulder
- i can bike on the road now!!! Which means the ol' Jetta is going to sit out for a bit ...
- I might be heading to Chile (Mar 29 - Apr 12) with the team as a techy but also to do some of my physical training in the altitude to get ready for Pan Ams in Mexico.... also might be heading to Austria for the Champions Challenge to video tape, too (May 1-14th)
So all that worry before and now things are really starting to look up for me :) I feel amazing. My body is doing some crazy changes, for the better, and hockey is going to be back in my life within the next 3 months. It's pretty remarkable what life throws at you sometimes. Which reminds me, I'm definitely sending thoughts and prayers to everyone in Japan right now. I hope that Victoria is prepared when/if an earthquake hits us!!
