This past week I was in Vancouver and was able to meet with my surgeon for my 3.5 month post-op check up. It was a bit of a whirl-wind because he actually cleared me to start playing again. That is 1.5 months ahead of schedule! You can imagine my excitement walking out of that hospital. At first all that was rushing through my head was that I had 3 weeks to catch up and get ready for Austria and the Champions Challenge II. Little did I know, there is a long process towards getting back and ready for competition, especially at the international level.
I was able to practice for about an hour at each practice Tues/Thurs/Fri and did some individual skill stuff during the day on Wed/Fri but you can imagine how sore my body was - even just after the first day. Only today, Monday, is some of the aching starting to go away. I think I did too much too fast and will need a bit of a plan for the next few weeks. It was nice to touch a stick and ball but you can for sure see that I have missed quite a lot. My touch is off. My decision making is slow. It's all so frustrating. To top it off, the young ones that are training with us (16-18 years old) are absolutely phenomenal. Their stick skills and speed are so incredible and I am glad they are on my team but they will be starting to move some of us older players off the team, real soon!
I am going to have to work really hard now to get back into "game shape" and be ready for Senior Nationals in June and the series we are having in July - playing games against Chile, Trinidad & Tobago, Japan and we will have two Canadian teams participating.
Through all this recovery I have been very thankful to have a product known as Dr. Oswald's Muscle Care. They were kind enough to let me sample it and I've been using it like a mad woman now that my body is trying to work itself out getting back into shape! The smell is actually very pleasant compared to Tiger balm or A535 and the pain relief is really great! I'm very pleased with it. I have been using the roll-on ointment!
I am spending Easter at home and then planning on returning to Vancouver for a few practices followed by lots of packing and organizing for Europe. I'm off to Vienna, Austria for 2 weeks to help video tape and code at the Champions Challenge II tournament and then I have 2 weeks vacation that I had planned because I thought I wasn't going to be able to return home to train. So, I'm spending a few days in Austria and then off to Italy. I'll be back at the end of May to start training June 1 !!
